Wendy Oresick 3-D-1 Documents, Data, and Cartoons Lesson Plans Objective: SWBAT utilize primary sources (eyewitness and participant interviews, census data) to create a timeline and oral history of the Glen Summit community that helped develop the town of Mountaintop. SWBAT demonstrate the ability to research community history to create a report on the history of Mountaintop. Length: 2-3 days Lesson Materials/Set-up: Flexible Groups, KWL chart, NARA worksheets for each group, Internet access for research, computer software and audio software for presentation, Senior Citizen group to interview Lesson Summary: In their flexible groups, students will begin their research using a KWL chart of what they know about the history of Mountaintop and the Glen Summit development (from previous instruction on our local history unit). They will create at least five (5) specific questions they would like answered by the eyewitness interviews. Students will interview senior citizens from the community to describe what Mountaintop was like in the early 1900s. The students will use the information to create a timeline of events. The students will focus much of their interviews from people who lived in and around the Glen Summit development. The students will support the interviews from using documents such as deeds to houses, wedding licenses, letters, journals, audio clips, as well as post office records. The students will utilize the NARA worksheet to analyze the primary sources as they prepare for their timeline and presentation. The students will also utilize a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the events noted from the people interviewed to determine similarities and differences from the event recollection of each interviewee. The students will also document the timeline of the population development of Mountaintop from census reports from the era. Upon completion of the research and interviews, the students will create an audio or Power Point presentation (secondary source) with his/her group of the timeline of events using all information to demonstrate accuracy of the history of Mountaintop. The students will also demonstrate their ability to research effectively by completing the āLā portion of the KWL chart that answers their five questions they listed prior to the research. Student groups will present their research presentations to the class.
